SC Expands Dementia Care Specialists Resources

Dementia assistance group discussion

WIS10 reports that the SC Legislature substantially increase access to specialists focused on Alzheimer's and dementia care. Lawmakers allocated $1.1 million to expand the number of dementia care specialists in South Carolina to ten. The workers will connect those diagnosed with dementia and their caregivers with local resources such as community meal services, area clinical trials, and support services. The SC Department of Aging states that the new care specialists will first be hired in the Pee Dee region (e.g., Chesterfield, Marboro, Dillon, Florence, Marion, and Darlington counties), the Lower Savanah region (e.g., Aiken, Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Calhoun, and Orangeburg counties), and the Catawba region (e.g., Union, Chester, Lancaster, and York counties). The demential care specialists will be available in public places such as local libraries. The Department of Aging has begun the hiring process and expects the new specialists in place by June 2025.
